This article was referred to me by Eponymous in comments yesterday. It's a good article that I highly recommend reading through carefully and thoroughly.

The author is a historian of military history in Israel.
Based on Moshe Dayan's visit to Vietnam as a journalist of sorts, there is some very valuable insight into some particularly American blind spots, above in intel and understanding real objectives. Best of all, it is not couched in oppositional cant, but balanced analysis, and one sympathetic to the United States.
I will try to do some comments on this.
