Aqaba: New source of amusement, play the fire at US ships game
Repeating my comment on 'Aqoul, a small observation or two in re this:
Well, this news in the AM bemused me:
Missile Fired at U.S. Navy Ship in Jordan
It reports two missiles (in fact, it appears mortars, not quite the same thing, Mr. Halaby, or perhaps Katyusha rockets..... well something explosive in any case) were fired at US warships at Aqaba harbor.
As I noted with 'Aqoul, the item that caught me overall attention was this:
U.S. frigates, apparently part of routine exercises with the Jordanian army, were seen docked at the mouth of the Red Sea port earlier this week
Some add on observations.
First, this seems likely to rather fuck over Aqaba port operations. I can only imagine the US Navy is going to go a bit nuts over security, and the Jordanians will play ball. Given the port, to my last knowledge, remains backlogged, this could have some serious near term impact on Jordanian shipments (dominated by Iraq bound transhipments).
Second, Jordan is going to go into a security tizzy. That is for sure. I have to suspect, not conclude, but suspect, that the ordonnance likely came via tribal smuggling routes into Jordan from Iraq.
Third, what is this going to mean for business?
Certainly there is a nasty suggestion of spillover. More than nasty, and disturbing. Now, on one hand the Jordanian security apparat is efficient and deadly. On the other hand, no such thing as prefection. A few trucks whacked inside Jordanian borders, e.g., or a nice little rocket attack on that attractive castle the US Gov has built in Amman (with the pretty blue armoured cars outside and the Chechan guards), well then you have poor Jordan going into quite a little pressure cooker.
Might make more five star rooms available. I recall when the truck bombers were wandering around - having slipped Jordanian security but having nevertheless their cover blow - things got quite antsy. On the other hand, at least one could go to fashionable places and get a seat. People apparently get antsy at the idea of getting blown up, although I thought it really was a matter of odds, I mean really, Abdoun circle?
Probably bad calc. on my part, frog, water and all that. But I did not get blown up, so .... all is well.
This aside, we've got a nasty little indication of spillover, which while not unexpected is unpleasant.

i wonder if it (whatever it was) was homebrewed or something more standard.

I would guess, just knowing the area around Aqaba that this was done by some Bedouine with tribal connexions to Iraq - KSA.
Guess only, however.
