In yet other matters, I assure my minders I am not planning to get blown up

Amusingly once more local Embassy has sent us its kind note to the effect of "please be mindful and don't get blown to bits on our watch, the paperwork is a killer and it looks bad."

I helpfully replied to the Desk Officer (or whatever the fuck they call themselves) that as of yet I didn't have any bombings on my agenda, and would do my best to be "vigilent" so as not to get blown up in an unscheduled bombing.

It's a partial pity that these warnings are not so direct as the one's when the Jordanians had a couple truck bombs wandering about, as I note in that case it became ridiculously easy to get seating at fashionable bars and cafes.

that is hilarious - I loved their comments regarding the paperwork.

I got ahold of a Universal Translator, and using the Compact/Truth output module, I got this:

"We'll be hating your guts while we're doing our CYA if you get blasted to pieces, so try not to. 'Mkay?"

That would be about right.

One can hardly blame them, people getting blown up on your watch does have negative career effects, or in the alternative, positive but a real pain.

i'm still on the Tunis embassy mailing list (for unknown reasons. i told them i exited the region over a month ago!) and they have lately sent out similar things but more along the lines of "don't get blown up and DONT RUN WITH SCISSORS!"

when they were sending these things out while i was in country, my stateside overlords would, on cue, freak out and order me to not leave Tunis, report all activity outside of my normal routine, not talk to strangers, and by no means eat any candy said strangers give me. needless to say i disobeyed those orders and went for weekend hikes along the Algerian frontier.
