On Sex & MENA: The Local Porn Industry

I have a longish reflection on this very subject, and on the issue of prostitution, general dress and the like. It needs editing (and has for months), but this week's report in La Gazette, a mainstream weekly, and some observations I made this weekend while shopping in my tres chic office-shopping mall complex provoke me to a small interim observation:

7383_1.jpg First, of course, I am not surprised that the article I cited, entitled "L’industrie du film X au Maroc" was published, given recent scandals in Agadir and hints of the same in Marrakech. Poverty combined with lack of opportunity combined with vast wealth differences always produces these kinds of things (although that has nothing perhaps to do with the Euro porn stars cited as having come to Marrakech).

I should note that the physical version of this article is rather more graphic and rather longer.

The problem posed here is perhaps triple.

First, there is the legitimacy of the tourism industry. Tourism is not going to develop well in the still conservative (socially speaking) if flexible (the conservatism being far removed from the blood-tribal conservatism of the Gulf and the Levant) Moroccan and even Tunisian societies, if it is gets a reputation of driving indecency among the local women. Indecency among the local men is vaguely tolerable, if not particularly liked (except among the indecent of course).

Second, there is the impact on politics and the strength of the Ikhouane, the Islamists. Porn scandals fairly play into their propaganda, and frankly the response of that narrow little group of liberals or quasi liberals here is so divorced from what society at large understands as to be laughable.

Third, there is the question of the role it plays in damaging women's rights generally, for if your average person comes to feel that women's rights in terms of work etc. is merely playing into the hands of the sexual exploiters (and that is something one hears more and more I feel), then women's rights lose.

I have no further comments for the moment, raising some issues I hope to come back to.

Oh, I forgot to mention my tres chic shopping complex. I realised, in the process of shuttling back and forth shopping for various and sundry items that there is a prostitution scene there. It was... intriguing. Fairly high class, actually, in terms of offer.

Well, still Khaliji season.

This reminds me of that unsavoury (but interesting) club I visited in Kenya. Definitely exposed the enormous wealth gap, but also had a nasty colonial undertone as well ("clients" were mostly white Europeans, prostitutes mostly black, darker skin = lower rate, etc).

Is there a similar subtext over there? Not necessarily with Khaliji clients, but perhaps with Western Europeans? Seems like an easy target for the anti-Western Islamists.

Also (and I may have brought this up with you already), the "Lebslut-attired secretary" probably fits well with conservative conclusions about working women and exploitation. I imagine that most local admin staff hired for Western firms are young, female and decently attractive. Do these women (or the staffing companies that hire them) think this attire is expected by Western businessmen or are they exploiting potential opportunities arising from working with rich Western bachelors? What is their economic status relative to other locals?

I'm aware that you're a keen observer of this phenomenon, any thoughts? Or will I have to wait for your magnum opus?
