Underdevelopment as Dilettantisme: Why MENA Does Not Attract Capital, Reason No. 5

While sadly behind on my ability to comment substantively, I thought a bit of a comment on dilettanstisme would be worth a quick intervention (and it being all I have time for, it's what one gets).

The comment is provoked by a series of convos over the past few days in regards to a certain MENA country (which for various sensitivity reasons shall remain unnamed) and its hosting of a MENA region investment conference. Let's say that our certain MENA country is not exactly a star performer in the realm of attracted FDI, per capita or in gross. Of course neither is the region.

Now, the bloody conference is a goddamned gift to our Certain Country, insofar as it is high profile, going to be fabulously well attended (as I understand from the people in the know, which is to say the organising body) and by investors from places that don't normally come to our Certain Country. As in Americans and not Petrol Companies.

All well and good. Except government of said Certain Country (whose speciality may be said to be dropping the ball) shows near zero interest. No, they are far, far more concerned with some big UN birthday bash that senior members of the Government wish to attend, including the relevant investment people. Now attendence of senior government officials is not a huge value add for the investor, but if the plain don't show up and those in "investment promotion" show little interest in ... well actually promoting investment by glad-handing and generally playing marketeer, the savvy investor has to say: "What's the reality behind all this one-stop-shop nonsense and the like? Is it all appearances with no follow-through?"

Meanwhile, non-hosting but competitor neighbors have lined up to sponsor side dinners, shows, etc. aimed at wooing and wowing the investor. Glad handing and happy talk marketing. Not the only thing, but you do need to show you fucking care, you bloody fucking idiots.

These dilettantes then wonder why they lag? Because they care more about some fucked up useless motherfucking UN happy birthday fucking waste of money bullshit bash than doing what they should be doing, promoting their own fucking country for investors so that the population might one day have the priviledge of being "exploited" (as the ignoramus anti-globo fools put it) by multinationals at more than the going black market poverty wage.

It does warm me heart to know that the waste of human flesh that is the minister in charge of "promoting" investment wants to sponsor a conference on the issue of "promoting" a "culture" of investment and "social resposibility."

I am sure he'll invite some of those useless whinging idiots from NGOs to whank on about "corporate citizenship" and the evils of the ugly foreign investor, while as usual missing the vampiric and self-dealing nature of goverment in the region.

Bloody useless scum.

I am more than slightly upset.

Of course I am still attending, why the fuck not? Schmooze.
