Vignettes of profound ignorance... Or simply things that annoy me to date.

Well, given I am on fine narcotics, only the best quality after all (and this means no cuban products), I shall babble on about how annoyed I am with my treatment so far. This being done in the five minute windows of coherence that I have.

I suppose concretely I should tell you that the operation went fine, that I now have a "window" (the charming jargon used) cut in me ribs, and have given up a chunk of my lungs to science and labs. Science being in a fit of public spiritedness, I consented to donate some of my tumour to some generic research on the probable cancer involved. Labs of course is the verification of the high probability diagnosis. With that will come some level of unpleasant treatment, as the tumour has spread into various sensitive areas of central chest and can't just be chopped out. Might be elsewhere too, but that's for some nice sporting testing in this upcoming week.

Now that I have gotten by the tedious rubbish, my whinging on.

First, I am not enjoying my care here, indeed despite the confident assertions to date on and offline that American health care is better than anything I can find back in the MENA region, I have been drastically underwhelmed by the quality of tertiary services.

Of course, the primary issue is the diagnostics, although I would say that to date they have not been faster than at my home base, but only slightly more advanced. Regardless, the slightly more advanced in key areas will, hopefully, this week, be able to define how fucked I am with respect to this cancer. A little bit fucked or more fucked, or deeply fucked.

That is, of course useful.

On the other hand the materials developed at my home base continue to be referenced so far, reflecting the fact of quality care there. At the same time my belief that I would find better nurses in America has been rather damaged by my experience to date with lazy, rude and stupid nurses at this, one of the "leading" hospitals in the nation.

Doubtless they are more skilled than the half-educated peasant girls taking care of me back at my home base, but they have been uniformly ignorant and rude otherwise. In short, in large part I have despised the nursing services deliverers. They've also been stereotypically tubby Americans.

I also note that getting prescriptions and the like filled here has proved an amusing challenge. First, when the various "professionals" see my home address they seem to go into some form of panic or ambulatory state of profound stupidity. Questions start with "That's a foreign country?" (Well, yes. Yes it is a foreign country) "What are you doing there?" (I give various dodgey answers just to fuck with them) "How do you have insurance?" (As if only Americans have insurance? Never mind, my insurance is American even. However these dimwits seem to believe anyone with a foriegn address has to be some kind of uninsured illegal immigrant or something) and the best one "Can't you give a real address?" (Right, I am deliberately giving you a fake foreign address. Simply for the amusement value.)

Well, regardless, later this upcoming week clarity should be had as to the precise type of fuckedness I have and what can be done about it. I am personally hoping I can fuck off somewhere else as this entire process has annoyed me to no end.

Can't you hire some sort of voluptuous, doe-eyed personal nursing assistant? The tubby/stupid/rude nurses must be very damaging to your morale.

you should investigate hiring a lebanese poptart as your personal nurse.

i'll redouble my cuban comfort efforts to help take up the slack you've left behind. i'm sure we'd all hate to see the cuban state suffer due to your varying levels of fuckedness from this rather rude and ill-timed cancer.

Nope, you pretty much have to ride herd to get done what has to get done.

Example, a departed relative was treated repeatedly as an inpatient at St. Vincent's (NYC for those unfamiliar) and at first I thought he'd get better nursing care than at another hospital due to their rep. And he did...but when he was on another floor in STVH it was a different story. As well as a phys rehab unit vs. typical convalescent unit. It can vary. Twice I hired a private duty nurse's aide to dot the i's and cross the t's when it counted, although that cued the hospital staff to rely on the private duty nurse's aide. So that aide had to execute.

While institutions can have great reputations for diagnostics, treatment, you need to look at the nurse-patient ratio. Fat nurses can be quite competent e.g. if they know what to watch out for but if they're understaffed, achtung.

Duke Medical in NC has a fabulous rep and last year some fools washed surgical instruments in industrial lubricants...and they got used. But if you are where I think you are I think you'll be ok.

Otherwise, see if you can get an audience with the charge nurse.

You could always say "I bet the Shah of Iran never had to go through this shit!"

If only Hamas ran a nursing agency in Brooklyn...

So, if you make it, does this mean we have to wear some stupid fucking bracelet?
