My Man Muammar

Say what you will, Muammar has a flair for gestures.

Something I have to blog about, when I get a chance is this fine piece of theatre:

  1. Adviser points to Libya's 'old guard' as block to reform
  2. Words to Gadaffi on rebranding Libya
  3. New blueprint for overhaul of Libyan economy

A real panache for the absurd. Now, I like Porter. I like Muammar. But this is a fine bit of theatre of the absurd.

I am sure Porter thinks the effort is serious. But I wouldn't bet my Green Book on this.

Strategy consultations in the context of the Libyan system of governance are... well they are about as meaningful as "party building" advice the US government gives to meaningless little whanker "political parties" in the region.

have you ever met the man? he is a person that i would very much like to meet. if only the consulate would have given me that visa at least i could have visited libya!

speaking of libya, how do you think the outlook is for expat engineering employment in country L in about 2 years?

and on the middle article

The writer is the FT's world trade editor. The above is a joke

hardly a joke. sound advice. branding libya appropriately is key.

sadly, i don't have a subscription to FT so i can't read #3. perhaps i'll peruse that issue in the local university library.

why is it that i'm so fascinated with libya anyway? perhaps it's the Lounsbury Syndrome.

If you need more reading for your drug-induced stupors, may I humbly recommend the Turkmen sequel - Rukhnama. A masterpiece of surrealism, if I may say so.

And the whole bit about the Islamic heritage of the Turkmen people is even funnier if read over shots of Turkmenbashi vodka.

Thanks to you, I read the first part of the Green Book online. It is a rather... unusual treatise.

Always glad to help Dubaiwalla. No MENA specialist should have missed the Green Book. It's utterly fabulous.
