Bollocks - Somali-Habash War upcoming

On the periphery of our MENA region, but with the potential for nasty blow-back upwards, it appears that Ethiopia has invaded Somalia, per reporting from Al Jazeera (Eng.) and from Reuters, reporting Somalia Islamic Courts milita(s) response. Bollocks. I'd like to have a year in MENA & Periphery where I need not suspect disaster was coming. Of course, not to be alarmist either, despite some fevered imaginations, the whole region is not exploding. But neither does it help to have more petrol poured on the various fires.

I read about this on Head Heeb just yesterday.

Not good.

Feh. Ethiopia starts wars more often than I take vacations. It's really hard for me to have a sense of crisis about this. Sad to say, this is just business as usual for them. The only difference is that this time I suspect they are being quietly encouraged by certain members of the international community.

Anyway, it's almost hard to get annoyed at Ethiopia over this. Islamic fundamentalists with irredentist tendencies have been attacking Ethiopia for years and Ethiopia has responded in kind. In other words, this is nothing really new. It's just that incidents on the Ethiopian-Somali border never used to make the news and now they do.

The Saudi/Wahabi influence in Somalia though is interesting. Similar patterns are slowly being recreated socially in countries like Sudan mostly by expats returning from the Gulf.

Following article is a few years old but I fished it out as I thought it was relevant.

Unrelated, but one for the quote file:

With a tight, condescending style (think Hitchens with the temperament of Dr. House) Lounsbury suggests Israel may be pushing the envelope.

Hitchens with the temperament of Dr. House. Ha.
