On lighter matters
I just caught what may be the queerest combination of music I have heard to date (that still merits the name music, meaning leaving aside the horrible clownish screeching that Cairo studios put out): Ragga-Rai.
Think a combination of Rai a la (ex-Cheb) Khaled and Shaggy.
Odd but compelling in a queer way.

Ha. That fusion is old like the French Arab diaspora. Well, not so, but you get the idea.

Nah, Reggea-Rai I've heard. Rap-Rai.
Not the specific Ragga-Rai.
But I split hairs for the unitiated.
It was pretty good actually.
Which leads me to ask why the Machreqi wailing synthesis of East and West is so very bad.
Oddly I'd say the Khalijis have more potential if they ever got over their complexes in the area of music.

Actually, there are some very good fusion tracks you could hear on this net radio (I can't hear pure undiluted Arab music, so I can't tell how good it would sound to your average Arab listener):

One track, Karmix's Llil, sounds to me like Mashreqi wailing listenable by Western ears. I'm not sure though, I'm not an expert.

Tayyeb, for other lighter matters (at least for me) get us a few articles on private equity and MENA (with capital flows to and from MENA). I'm info-thirsty about the topic.
