More PE Capital into Africa

An interesting note in the WP Citigroup is teaming up w CDC for an Africa fund covering in part North Africa.

I am not, however, terribly convinced that major bank players such as Citi are the right structures to invest in these markets (quite the contrary, the history of the same is not all that encouraging).

Updated: The CDC seems to be on a publicity blitz FIXED LINK

Actually there are some interesting assertions to discuss re the role of PE in developing emerging markets that one can discuss.

Making money in emerging markets is and has always been a mystery to me. Shoot, I can't even figure out how you make money out of a mid-sized town in the US, as the market in such a place just strikes me as being too small, but obviously people do it all the time.
Still, this smacks of a bit of PR. The amount is rather small for Citi. OTOH, they don't do anything they don't see some profit in, so there must be some there there.

Same as any place else mate, same as any place else. Just a different scale.

Of course the size is smallish, but one has a hard time investing more in emerging markets - more bang for the buck, but also smaller sized opportunities.

That second link circles back here, somehow.

I have to say, after 14 years living in a country transitioning into European capitalism, I still don't understand how people make money off investing here. My company is one of the few that made a profit for its VC investors.
The best way actually for someone to have made money here was to jump through the hoops, set up a local corporation and use it to buy Prague real estate back in 92 or 93. Anyone who did that has made a killing. Yet I had a friend who had friends in real estate who poo-poohed it at the time, putting all their capital into the sure thing that was Canary Wharf.
