Presents

What do you give a good friend who's just become the governor of a central bank?

Actually a serious question.

I have to do something, if only for the sucking up value.

But then there is the conflict of interest thing. Not that I work for a regulated entity, but I do deal with regulated entities.

Well, liquor is usually a good bet. I can ship you a bottle of Bourbon if you like.

Dear L,

you could give him a humongo-pack of those "Swiss Gold Bar" chocolates.

And, there's also that Vodka that has flakes of gold in it ...

Iraqi dinars, what else.

I'm guessing the central bank is of a MENA country, so that gifts that are even implicitly haram aren't okay?

A big can of Fiduciary Gravitas?

I am not going to tell you what country or what region for the obvious reasons.

However, I would say that haram gifts are not in order as regardless of said person's religion (which frankly I am not certain of), my friend is a non-smoking non-drinking sort. Cuban products are right out then.

Finding the approp balance is important in this instance.

How about something corporate, like a Mont Blanc or Cartier writing set. Always goes down well in my experience..

Hmm. Always hated those things myself, but probably a good suggestion.

I'd go with a tarbouche and a smoking jacket for the new Pasha, but he'd have to be someone who'd get the joke. Probably best go with something safe and stodgy though. Can only imagine what the head of a central bank must be like.

Quite a good mate, actually.

How about a ticket to a sporting or theatrical event, depending on his proclivities?

Scheduling, time zones, buying facilities and plain lack of taste on my part are all barriers to a cultured response to this gift buying moment.
