Hijab et Football, FIFA et Reaction
While it doesn't surprise me that personages as fearful and ill-informed as Andrew Sullivan confuse the Hijab and the Niqab (a recent posting of his on the issue of the Hijab in Europe had a pic of a full out Saudi ninja gear woman), it does seem rather disappointing (if the blog got it right) that FIFA confuses the issue as well.

Actually, my understanding is that FIFA did not ban the hijab, but refused to clarify whether it was banned, referring people to existing rules, which are ambiguous on the subject. This has just been spun wildly because hey, that's what people do.

Right, my caution with respect to "if the blog" got it right being justified....

What happened here is that FIFA endorsed the Québec decision in the game in question ("FIFA upholds hijab ban"), but left it to referees and local federations to interpret the rule as they may, ("FIFA doesn't ban hijab") instead of issuing an all-encompassing ruling on the question of hijab-wearing (with ramifications to all religious headgear-wearing) itself.
