Personal Assistance: new phones

Well, I killed me fancy schmancy but now dated phone. Apparently hurling a phone across a conference room into a faux-granite whatever does bad things to it. As satisfying as that was at the moment -given the staggeringly stupid thing home did to me.

So, any observations on PDA-Phones? Recalling the following points:
(i) I have a tendency to treat things badly, so pricing should be in the <400 USD range, as I feel badly destroying truly expensive things,
(ii) Given travel and other restrictions, as well as basing, internet orders and the like is right out. Something likely to be found in the open market,
(iii) data portability, I really dream of having something that syncs without headaches to me laptop.

So, readers recommendations on durable, mid-price point ranged PDA phones with Windows capability and likely available in the various emerging markets I am constantly bouncing around in, and above all having real road warrior capacity to work with every dodgy network out there....

What were you using before you reverse engineered it?

Back in Dec 2006 you ruled out Blackberry. Does this mean you do not want a QWERTY keyboard? Or do you not care/using a foldout keyboard when needed?

Do you require Windows Mobile? Are you using Windows Mobile 5 currently? Do you want to go to Windows Mobile 6?

Do you need to create documents with this device or merely edit them?

Do you need a touchscreen?

Do you need a camera?

Minimum battery life?

If you need Windows Mobile you might consider HTC S710 or wait for the S730 model to be delivered. Candybar style phone but with a slideout QWERTY keyboard (not a thumb-y sized Blackberry style keyboard)

HP IPAQ 614, if available at retail level might be worth a look. 514 might be cheaper but I think it does not have touchscreen. Not sure about the 614 features or price.

Not being familiar with Microsoft Excel on the Windows Mobile, I don't know if you can select ranges of cells on 6.0 (or 5.0).

Not sure what is available in MENA, in general. S710 should be around your price target; HP 514 less.

Symbian OS models at $400 would put you in Nokia E61 territory.

I have heard that Toshiba Portege 900 was buggy; Samsung Blackjack OK but lousy battery life.

I had an Ericson.

I am indifferent to Windows Mob 5 or 6, but I do like being able to create documents. I have no use for a phone camera - although I suppose most of the things have them now. Memory and ability to exchange data with laptop, that's what I care about.

Touchscreen versus keypad, that's a hard call. I have always liked touchscreens, but finding a QWERTY keyboard around here can be a pain.

And longish battery life is preferable of course.
